Some Taxpayers Received Duplicate Stimulus Payments June 20, 2008

This report was inĀ  the NATTAX pro Blog. This probably sickens you too!

“The IRS has received reports of some taxpayers receiving duplicate economic stimulus payments. The duplicate payments are either in the form of a paper check or an additional direct deposit. Individuals who receive duplicate economic stimulus payments should immediately return the erroneous payment to the IRS.

If the erroneous payment was received as a paper check, the check should be marked “VOID” in the endorsement section on the back of the check and the recipient should attach a note indicating that he or she is returning an “Erroneous Stimulus Payment Check.”

Individuals who receive duplicate direct deposits of economic stimulus payments should advise their bank or financial institution of the mistake. The bank or financial institution will know the proper procedures for returning the money to the IRS.”

All I have to say is HAHAHAHA. Sure they will get those back.

Of course they will — one way or the other. If the individuals receiving duplicate payments don’t return the overpayment to the IRS, they can be charged with criminal tax fraud. At the very least, they will be sent a bill from the IRS with penalties and interest added to the unreturned check amount. Negligence penalties (yes, you should have realized this was a duplicate payment to which you were not entitled, and you should have returned it without any notice from the IRS) will add 25-50% to the unreturned payment amount. Fraud penalties will add much more, including 5-10 in Leavenworth.

There are much safer ways of bilking the government, for example, getting a civil service job.

I filed my return at midnight on April the 15 and still have not received a stimulus check…Some people got two and I have yet to get one. Something is very wrong here.

Did you change addresses recently? I never received mine either, but it was because I had moved and the gov’t won’t forward your check. I found out it was delivered to my old address and so I was able to get a hold of it and cash it. The gov’t had already put a trace on it by that time, so I was expecting to hear from them about it being cashed (by me). Instead, however, I was sent a second check, which I will soon be sending back to them. Crazy stuff!
